Whatever: A Teenage Musical
A
ground breaking musical combining mock-interviews, drama and grime
music, that lets Brighton teenagers tell their stories of love, sex and
violence in a unique format.
Award-winning documentary-maker Daisy Asquith in collaboration with
Dunstan Bruce of cult band Chumbawamba team up to tell the stories of
disaffected youth in Brighton. Shot in the style of a documentary, the
film has a cast of 14-17 year old actors, MCs and vocalists who were
found at youth centres and schools in the city itself.
'Whatever' gets you inside the heads of a diverse group of teenagers
using mock interviews, improvised drama and original songs to give
layers of insight into their world. The young cast display an
extraordinary talent, portraying their characters reality through raw
lyrics and gritty music. The soundtrack has already sparked the
interest of London based Ninja Tunes.
“It is valuable because it allows the young cast to channel their
frustration and anger into something creative, which expresses their
feelings far more effectively than violence or self-harm. Better yet,
it contains a couple of exceptionally talented performances. There is
much to admire, even if it is difficult to enjoy.”
