The Umbrella Assassin : Revealed
We
delve into the real story of The Cold War assassination of Bulgarian
dissident Georgi Markov, whose unusual death became known as the
'umbrella murder'.
Whilst travelling to work on Waterloo Bridge in 1978, Georgi
Markov, a Bulgarian dissident working for the BBC, collided with
a man carrying an umbrella. Markov felt as if he had been stung
by something, but thought no more about it. Three days later he died.
What had looked like a curious accident became one of the most
notorious stories of The Cold War.
Thirty years on it remains unsolved, but the film discovers shocking
new information revealing that Scotland Yard interrogated the prime
suspect in the case in 1993, and released him shortly afterwards.
The trail leads journalist Jack Hamilton to Copenhagen, where he
discovers some surprising information about the man at the centre of
the Georgi Markov murder

“Crisply and urgently done, diligent in its pursuit of leads and
with an enormously wide range of contributors, this was the best
investigative documentary I have seen in at least a year – a
model of how to tell a complicated story in a manner that was as
gripping as it was comprehensible…”
Sunday Telegraph, London
“Fascinating…. the details of the case are vividly recalled by numerous people involved…”
New York Times
"“Umbrella
Assassin” is as well-crafted as the crime itself.
[…] A lot of TV history shows get on our nerves with their
sexed-up re-enactments, but Secrets delivers the goods with admirable
restraint — and just enough style to do justice to the ultimate
true-life James Bond story.”
Very Short List (www.veryshortlist.com)
“Who needs
James Bond and his fictional spies when there are first-class factual
programmes like this being made? Authoritatively researched by
[journalist Jack] Hamilton, this was a powerful reminder of the bad old
days of the Cold War…”
Evening Standard, London
