The Great Escape : Revealed
Follow
archaeologists and veterans as they hunt for the tunnel the Germans
never found, in an unprecedented investigation into the remarkable
creation of this secret escape route.
The real great escape did not feature Steve McQueen on a motorbike -
but it's a gripping, action-packed story none the less. In this program
a team of archaeologists visit the Stalag Luft III camp where the daring
escape attempt took place
The escape plan involved 600 inmates in the creation of 3 tunnels
(named Tom, Dick and Harry) each with its own railway, electric
lighting and ventilation pumps.
Unfortunately the escape attempt was not entirely successful, though 76
escaped only 3 of the allied captives made it back to Western Europe.
In the ensuing search of the camp 2 of the tunnels were found. However
one, Dick, was overlooked - until our archaeologists arrive on the scene
to uncover its dramatic story.

“Moving documentary focusing on the incredible story of the
prisoner-of-war breakout that inspired the classic film ‘The
great Escape’. Jimmy James one of the 76 to escape through
the tunnel returns to Germany after six decades to assist a team of
archaeologists as they investigate the remains of Stalag Luft 3 and
search for tools built by the prisoners. A thoroughly absorbing
historical drama”
